Chapter 39

You might not believe me when I say this, but I have always tried to protect you from it all.

Like when you woke me in the dead of night and tried to get us out of the house before the police arrested you? That seems like it was more a case of saving your own skin.

I judged it badly, I know. I really did have your best interests in mind. I didn’t want you to have to suffer for the person I was. You’re my little princess, always will be, no matter how old you are. The times I spent with you were the most precious – the memories of them keep me going during the darkest times here.

It’s a shame my memories of you – of us – are ruined because of what you did; who you are. They don’t keep me going in the darkest days – they drag me down, make me feel worse. Make me question who I am.

I never talk about you because I don’t want anyone to use what I say against you somehow. You’re the one thing I keep private no matter how hard psychologists, fellow inmates, journalists and the like, press me for details. They try their underhand tactics to trick me into divulging what we did together – how we spent our time. They want me to tell them that you saw something, that you were involved in some way. They’re hateful. No matter what I tell them, they twist it.

Twist it how? I didn’t see anything. I had no clue what you were doing. How could I have?

No wonder you suffer with night terrors. My poor princess. I’m so, so sorry. I wish I could help you.
